It’s been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon. Quieter than usual. The developers at ngmoco:) booked a retreat for their staffers to help them recharge for the coming year. They soon realized they would have to switch travel agents because when they arrived at the Sidetrack tap with all of their luggage and wireless equipment Wally had to explain that what he said to the booking agent was that “the Sidetrack is about as close as you can get to a bed and breakfast in Lake Wobegon,” which is, you have to admit, not at all the same as saying it was a bed and breakfast. It isn’t his fault that people make assumptions, he told Evelyn later that evening after they put up folding cots and old army sleeping bags in the cooler. The sleeping bags were the old mummy style sleeping bags that wrapped you like a cocoon to keep you warm as a toasted marshmallow over a campfire and the tourists couldn’t really complain since the cooler was still warmer than it was outside. This did not prepare Wally for the outrage the next morning when he explained the Sidetrack was wireless, every appliance was run from a single outlet. Zimidar, the team leader, explained that educated people know wireless means computers can download data from the air. Wally shook his head and replied, “Who would a dreamed they’d come up with something like that.” Of course, Wally and Evelyn knew what wireless meant. They’d been to the ...

Not much news for blog’s return I’m running behind on the articles I took time off to write, but I thought I should take the time to review the latest developments, or lack of them, in We Rule. Once Christmas ended, and the incredible outpouring of items from the We Rule shop, ngmoco:) began to slow things down. Only three items have been introduced for Halloween, although they may still release some items on Valentine’s Day or Monday. Quite frankly, I’m relieved. But I’ve also noticed that they’ve been sloppy and lax lately. They took a couple of days to add the splash screens to announce several items. Their blog and Facebook entries have been noticeably uninformative, especially about event rewards beyond the traditional two items. Interestingly, they removed the experience point leaders from the leader boards but still have the leader listings for the Thanksgiving event (three events ago) without posting leaders for the two that followed. Okay, I had fallen a hundred places or so in the leaders when they dropped it, and perhaps they were afraid that new players would be scared off seeing leaders with three billion points. The landing strip and craft factory that were rewards for the most recent event were the coolest in a long time, maybe ever. I really liked the steam punk crafts as well. Too bad we won’t know who collected the most. ngmoco:) hasn’t updated event leaders since Thanksgiving.
Winter break arrives I will be taking some time off to work on other projects as I did last year. I will post to the blog if something important happens, and I will keep updating the numbers as quickly as I can. See you in February. And the showcase features… The entries are all in and I picked the five designs I thought really expressed the possibilities of winter realms in We Rule. If your entry wasn’t included, that doesn’t mean I didn’t like it. These just struck a chord with me for balance, symmetry and creativity. Next year I will remember to promote this more than I did so more people will get a chance to participate but I appreciate every entry. The entries were far more elaborate this year, but we had a lot more to work with too. Had more of the winter gifts showed up, we might have seen even cooler displays. The design that truly stood out (and usually I prefer more organic designs) was the Christmas tree by Petra Kunzan (asdfcxy3). K1W. Her south realm is worth checking out as well. Click image to see full size Click image to see full size Kevin Toh’s (storm738) dimensional kingdom conveys some creepiness when you realize how many skulls the goblins collected to build it. K2S Michael LaSordo (ml411) built this slightly asymmetrical winter port city. K1SW Click image to see full size Click image to see full size The skull posts in this winter realm ...
