  1. We Rule interface updated for Android users!

This morning, the We Rule team released a new update for Android users.

This update brings a brand new user interface to We Rule that makes it easier to get around the game. If you’re running an Android device, check it out and let us know what you think!

As far as new content goes, new skeleton content will be released later this week! We apologize for the delay. The team has been hard at work on this new interface update.

  2. No news is no news

Last week I wondered to myself if we weren’t in for another event this week. This seems to be the pattern after a week without new stuff. So today, when We Rule asked me to shut down for new content I figured, “Aha, this is it.”

Instead I have been unable to log on in the hours since. All I get is the message, “unable to connect.”

For a brief instant I thought we were back in business when I got a new message asking me to shut down for even more new content, but when I logged back in I was unable to connect yet again. I finally decided to post and start a whole new wave of speculation about ngmoco:)’s future.

All I’ve seen when I tried to play today is “unable to connect.” Does this portend an upgrade or new event? Or are we facing a We Rule apocalypse? Or did someone screw up and disconnect the servers? We can only wait and see.

It’s not that they haven’t had their servers down before, but never this long and never without a message warning us that the servers would be down for maintenance or upgrades.

By the time you read this, the suspense may be over, but at this second in time I have to wonder if there is another upgrade coming (with all of the bugs that follow), a new event, perhaps with the Sta-Puft marshmallow man and other movie monsters, the long awaited release of the blockbuster building that will deliver more than 20000cp, or a going out of business sign.

I, however, believe that speculation is a crap shoot. Throw enough speculations out there and one of them is bound to happen. That’s why I think I have my bases covered with the speculations above. Whatever happens now, I feel confident that next week I will be able to say, “I predicted it.”

    Dream heights fails to reach

In the meantime, for those of you who were disappointed with ngmoco:)’s newest release Dreamtopia, take heart. Zynga is now pushing “Dream Heights,” their new game where you build a custom condo tower. It might sound original if I hadn’t already downloaded at least three similar games. And they all suck.

Maybe if Zynga created Jinga Towers where you build a tower with shops and apartments and then have to remove them one-by-one without collapsing the tower. Then you could see all the animated characters scream and flail their arms as they fall helplessly as their tower crumbles around them because you should have left the gay bar where it was. That might be as fun as Dreamtopia. Which still wasn’t really fun.

But it does mean Zynga, ngmoco:)’s big bully of a competitor, is feeling heat too. So We Rule fans can at least have a moment of schadenfreude to compensate for our crushed dreams of dreamtopia.

Is the game running again? I’ll quit writing to check….

    No, still not connecting.

Oh, I forgot one other possibility. The new item may just be another collection of residences and shops. Or new crops.

Now I think I have my bases covered. Remember, whatever they end up doing, I predicted it here.

    Postscript from the evening

Well, I finally got back in, had to wait for new content to download, relaunched and discovered my predictions were all wrong. In fact, the new content is…well there is no new content. I should have seen it coming but I didn’t.

It’s possible the changes will show up overnight in the form of an event, but knowing ngmoco:) I wouldn’t be surprised if nothing happened.

  3. Time to mix it with your groves

In the past I’ve always promoted residences as a replacement for groves as your income grows and you can afford to add two or three a day. But I’ve always though ruby groves were the best investment at lower levels when cash remains hard to come by.

In fact, if Book Baby ever gets around to releasing my book, you will discover that’s still my opinion in the official Grimoire. However, things change and the new mongol residence is that game changer.

Mongol residences deliver 65xp every hour (20c) for 13000c (4m). This is only 5000c more than a ruby grove (and half the mojo) which delivers 30cp an hour but every six hours. You have to clock in every hour to make mongol residences worth your while, but they will be worth your while.

Best of all, you can get them at L18. This means you can start adding them to your kingdom before you can start installing ruby groves.

The mongol residence delivers 85cp every hour. You can start installing before you become eligible for ruby groves.

Should you forego ruby groves altogether? I wouldn’t go that far. Rubies still earn more over a stretch longer than three hours, and I doubt you will be able to cash in on mongol residences 24 hours a day. You will also reach a point where it’s no longer worth your while to harvest every hour or two. When that happens, you will find the groves pay off far better.

I would recommend a mix of two groves to one residence (two to two max). Once you can start installing the higher value residences, however, especially the Persian residence, move on. The mongol will lose its value the higher your level.

    Happy Monday!

UPDATE: The contest has come to an end! Congratulations to the following Rulers: acflows, carameljam, craigtone0, Mochigan, and smaaug! Make sure to click through and check out their awesome Realms!

We’re going to give 2,000 Mojo to 5 lucky Rulers! How do you win? Simply share a screenshot of your Kingdom with the We Rule community right here on the blog!

    1. Leave a comment on this blog post with your Plus+ / Mobage username.
    2. Include a link to a screenshot of your favorite Realm in your Kingdom. You can upload your Realm using a free image hosting service such as imgur, minus, tinypic, CloudApp, or Photobucket. (Android users, we realize taking screenshots is a bit more difficult – a photo of your device will suffice, or have your fellow We Rulers grab a screenshot for you!)
    3. That’s it!

For example, this is how I would enter (but I can’t!):
“I’m rockbandit, check out my main realm! It needs a lot of work: http://i.imgur.com/YT5RU.jpg

  7. Is We Rule winding down?

    Posted by
    / /

Players have been worried that ngmoco:) may be dropping the ball on We Rule since they’ve slowed down the pace of new item development. In the comments section this week I mentioned to Susan Moon and others that their focus on Dreamtopia has probably been the culprit.

The night I posted ngmoco:) proved me right again by making the only item released this week a clone of the Dreamtopia birdhouse. It’s free, but the hourly return rate makes it a poor draw to Dreamtopia.

Does Dreamtopia stack up well to We Rule? Will it grab Farmville’s market share while We Rule drifts away leaving players with millions invested in mojo for a game that no longer plays?

As you may guess by looking at it, Dreamtopia steals from Dragonville, Godfinger, Cityville and, most of all, We Rule. Maybe a little Trade Nations, now that I think of it. The question is, will players spend even more on a mojo product?

Players who have tried Dreamtopia will feel that they’ve played the game before. They have. It’s We Rule with a different motif. Instead of building a medieval kingdom, you build people’s dreams. And the game takes place on a floating island. Other than that you grow crops (emotions) from clouds, invest in buildings, trade with other players and level up.

The graphics seem to be inspired by Godfinger (if not by the same design team). The goals are more like Cityville’s than We Rule’s. Each new character has a dream and you have to plant, build and buy to fulfill that dream. But the goals function almost identically to We Rule’s.

Just in case you didn’t get the connection to We Rule, ngmoco:) introduced a rock festival event this weekend. You have to order from the tour bus and sign six singers for your band to win a prize. When a musician shows up you audition them, but the only way to make sure they end up staying with the band is to spend stardust.

Look familiar? Dreamtopia launched an event on their opening weekend. You don’t catch dragons, but you do sign members to your band.

I can’t predict the success of this game, but I have a feeling the charm will wear off more quickly than it did with Adventure Bay, which I enjoyed a hell of a lot more. Many players may remember that one. You were a pirate, adventurer who could go on treasure hunting missions. Not only did you order from other player’s shops, you boosted their voyages so you could share in the swag.

Adventure Bay folded after a few months. I suspect the main reason was that players were inundated with We Rule, We Farm and too many other games. They could only spend so much on stupid game cash, so something had to give.

This doesn’t mean Dreamtopia won’t catch on. But I’ve only seen two genuinely innovative social network games since We Rule, Snoopy’s Fair and Battle Nations. The odds are stacked against Dreamtopia except as a game to attract new users and social network gamers who have already abandoned games like We Rule and want something novel. The fact that it’s really a Droid app makes me feel the real target market may be players relatively new to tablets and smart phones.

The best way to make sure We Rule remains a priority with ngmoco:) is to make it your priority. I will probably play a few more days to see if it gets any better, but I will not spend money for stardust. If you genuinely think Dreamtopia is a better game than We Rule, by all means you should play it. But if you are heavily invested in We Rule, show your support for the game by spending your money there.

I have seen a lot of social network games since I first reviewed We Rule and none of them have charmed me long enough to stick with them this long. Some games, like Trade Nations, I open once a day to collect my daily reward in case I get interested again. And then I close them. Most I play for a week.

The best way to keep them competing with We Rule is to divert my money to them.

  8. Has the character well run dry?

    Posted by
    / /

I don’t know if you’ve noticed but fewer and fewer buildings are coming with characters. We had five martial guilds introduced this week and not a single warlike character.

In the past we would have had women with bows for the sisterhood of archers, turbaned characters with daggers for the assassins’ cartel and a new wizard for the wizards’ college. Maybe another knight or Viking berserker for the warrior’s clan. This time, nothing.

I could see it for the plant buildings last week. What could they have come up with? Fly traps on four legs? Or flies swarming the fly trap? Dancing sunflowers?

There may be some good reasons for the scarcity. It’s possible that with the new retina display, the number of pixels in play make animation eat into the processor. Or bad reasons, like, perhaps, ngmoco:) let the animators go during the cash crunch.

In the past, players would request new buildings. Maybe we should request new characters instead. How about a phantom marauder swinging a ghostly battle axe? A sabertooth tiger? A crone with a cane that points and zaps? A wise man with a camel might be cool, wearing robes and a cone hat like in Bartholomew Cubbins and the Oobleck. How about an Anglican priest and Pontificating Pope? Or maybe we could get the entire Borgia family in honor of the Showtime series.

Hopefully we won’t reach a time when we’ll stop installing new buildings because we don’t want to lose the few characters we have left.

Have they given us a gryphon yet? An adult, not the baby? How about leviathan? Maybe a replica nautilus, the submarine, floating on top of a lake tile.
